Looking back...I remember Dad and Fred always talked politics. They were always ribbing each other. Political pranks were always brewing. The Ford/Carter race in 1976, had them going good, and that's where the bet came into play. Dad exclaimed, "I will push a peanut across the street with my NOSE if Carter gets in!" (little history, Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer, so this seemed appropriate.) As the snow piled up, the election was decided. Dad came home from work early to shovel the street. Little did dad know there would be a full news crew and newspaper reporter there for the festivities! Good fun, great friends! That's my pop in the middle. The headlines read: Jimmy Carter Wins the 1976 Presidential Election
The Democrat had been governor of the southern state of Georgia and, before that, a nuclear engineer and a peanut farmer. He defeated Gerald Ford, who took office after Richard Nixon resigned.
Presidents in my lifetime...
36 Lyndon B. Johnson
37 Richard M. Nixon
38 Gerald R. Ford
39 Jimmy Carter
40 Ronald Reagan
41 George Bush
42 Bill Clinton
43 George W. Bush
44 Barack Obama
P.S. Could I really be that old?
My baby is almost ready to vote. She is very upset that she missed this election by just 3 months! She is happy with the outcome, but would have like to have been a part of it.
